![]() ![]() That being said, there are limits and AppleCare (their extended warranty program) is recommended. I had my battery swapped out for free, for example. You'll find hundreds of stories on this subreddit and other places of Apple going above and beyond, including swapping out machines for newer models-for FREE-well outside of the warranty period. In cases where I have had issues with my machine Apple customer service is simply the best. I put my last Macbook through hell (including spilling water on it) and it kept chugging away. The keyboard is similarly very responsive. The trackpad is responsive, scrolling smoothly and with a good tactile feel. Sometimes they just bug out for no reason, or suffer weird persistent glitches. I can't count how many times I've used a friends laptop with a flimsy case, unresponsive trackpad, disconcerting/confusing keyboard, etc. ![]() Just using a Macbook as your everyday laptop, the hardware and build quality seems much higher. The universal case for a Mac over any other laptop is three-fold in my mind: The benefits of each largely depend on your use case (in your case, I guess your major). I've also used the new retina macbook and the macbook air at various times. I owned 2 white Macbooks, the second of which I bought in 2010 and have been using in an increasingly crippled state (broken keyboard, broken speakers, damaged screen) until a couple of months ago when my friend gave me his 2012 Macbook Pro. I used to keep a PC around, but now I just use Parallels when I need it. Since then I've had a 17" PowerBook, 24" iMac, 27" iMac (2009), Aluminum Macbook, 27" iMac (2012), and the aforementioned Air and rMBP. But my wife who I married in 2001 was a Mac user and OS X won me over in ways that OS 9 and earlier just never did. I was a Windows Desktop Engineer through 2008. I grew up on a TRS-80 Color Computer (2 and 3) in the 80s and then had DOS/Windows machines until 2002. The reason I opted to move to a rMBP is because I want to start using it for editing photos remotely and the TN screen of the Air, while perfectly good for most things, is just not as good for color reproduction as an IPS panel and also doesn't have the glass screen to protect it. Super light, quiet, fast, never gave me a problem, and when I sold it it still had over 90% of the original battery capacity. Even though I was getting a superior machine, it was tough letting go of the Air because in many ways it was the best laptop I've ever owned. I just sold my 2011 MacBook Air for a 2014 rMBP.
